Important essay. I recently got into a mild dispute with a friend over 'optimism' and hope This was triggered by an 'optimistic' article about the future in the Guardian. The writer claimed that 'negativity bias' clouds our view of the future, and then trotted out the usual ecomodern arguments, including the claim we've got climate breakdown under control. Very lacking in credibility IMO: but I felt guilty after for being too 'negative'. I'm currently trying to complete a long article on my substack about it, but TBH I'm not sure who for. Most people I talk to would rather have bromide than a realistic assessment of where we are. I tend to lose readers if I'm too blunt about what I really think.
